The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Journal Packet
Instructions: For each journal entry, read the prompt and respond with three (3) to five (5) paragraphs. It is recommended that you periodically write journals throughout the time that you read the book. Each journal will have a section which denotes when it is recommended that you write the journal, in terms of your progress through the book.
Each journal entry will be worth up to 20 points. The full journal is worth up to 100 points, and will be considered a test grade. All journals must be typed.
All five journal entries are due on March 26th, 2012.
Journal Entry #1
Recommendation: Complete chapter 7 prior to writing to this journal.
The experiences of our protagonist, Arthur Dent, seem to align very closely with the experiences of humanity in general, in terms of their respective fates. In three to five paragraphs, compare and contrast Arthur dent’s situation (regarding his home), and the situation of humanity (regarding its home). Discuss the scale of these events in your comparison.
Journal Entry #2
Recommendation: Complete chapter 14 prior to writing to this journal.
The story up to this point has made good use of something called the Improbability drive. Describe how this device works, and consider whether such a device would be useful if you were able to have a “Pocket Improbability Drive”. Would you use it? If so, for what purposes would you use it? What effects would the existence of such a device have on humanity as a whole?
Journal Entry #3
Recommendation: Complete chapter 21 prior to writing to this journal.
At this point in the book, we have been acquainted with Marvin, the “Manic Depressive Robot.” Considering Arthur’s situation in relation to what we know of Marvin’s situation, compare the reactions of Arthur and Marvin, and discuss whether you believe that their reactions and feelings are reasonable within the scope of their experiences.
Journal Entry #4
Recommendation: Complete chapter 28 prior to writing to this journal.
Consider “Deep Thought”. When asked to discover the answer to the ultimate question of Life, the Universe, and Everything, the answer given was forty-two. To understand the answer, though, we must understand the question. What do you think Douglas Adams is saying by writing that the answer to the ultimate question of Life, the Universe, and Everything is forty-two? Moreover, what conclusions can we draw about the relationships between answers and their corresponding questions?
Journal Entry #5
Recommendation: Complete chapter 35 prior to writing to this journal.
Having completed The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, consider the human condition. As you are reading this, it is a reasonable assumption that the Earth remains in its proper place revolving around Alpha Centauri in the Milky Way Galaxy. Because life here is, in some respects, as it always has been, what valuable insight does The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy provide its readers? Are we any closer to understanding the ultimate questions of Life, the Universe, and Everything today, in 2012, than humanity was in 2000 B.C.?
